Becoming by Michelle Obama

Becoming by Michelle Obama

I read Michelle’s book in the year it was first released. I recall friends and family who would never bother to read such voluminous books, painstakingly turning each leaf, taking in every word Michelle penned like she was specifically speaking to them.

Michelle began by drawing us into the lives of her parents, Barack’s early days, her father’s health challenges, the close-knit family they were, and everyone’s favourite part, where and how the story of Barack and Michelle began.

Just like any other person, Michelle had a dream to be a paediatrician in her early years. As we all know, sometimes our plans take a different trajectory, turning out even better than we had dreamed.  Michelle, a great and successful woman, like anyone one of us, had a normal life. She failed her bar exam at the first instance, she was not keen on politics, she had marital problems with Barack and resorted to counselling, she also had difficulty conceiving her children.

Undoubtedly, Michelle is hardworking, determined, her aura and charisma continuously shine through. As the first black first lady in America, she must have felt some unspoken pressure to deliver, and she handled the seat with so much grace.

While we all have stories that make up our life’s journey, Michelle’s book is quite inspirational. It touches on so many aspects of one's life, and is a great read for professional women who require inspiration, some balance, and just a good book to enjoy.
