Women’s economic empowerment is a powerful lever for change which can drive gender equality and elicit broader intergenerational benefits for women, their families, communities, and countries. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) address obstacles that obstruct economic justice for women, advancing a new paradigm of economic empowerment.
This 2019/2020 publication by UN Women, presents an assessment on the major challenges faced by “ Families in a Changing World”; the laws required to promote equality, acknowledge family diversity and mitigate violence against women; the roles of public service in fostering gender equality; women’s right to access sufficient and independent income; as well as the regulations required to protect women’s rights specifically in Sub-Saharan Africa.
While Abraham Lincoln asserts that "democracy is the government of the people, for the people and by the people" It has been observed that gender inequality generally affects women’s support for democracy. However, this publication highlights factors that can foster women’s participation in democracy in Sub-Saharan Africa.
